As you may know, Ontario will be the first jurisdiction in the country to introduce this disability legislation, effective January 1, 2012.  The legislation is applicable to anyone conducting business in Ontario and penalties of up to $100,000 may be charged to those who do not comply.

One of my suppliers, Standard Life, are offering assistance to help businesses comply by offering a new Accessibility web page. You will find links to information and online training so that you are better equipped to provide access to goods and services to all of your customers, including those with disabilities.

The JLC is transformed succinctly as it does with every other event they host so well.  What stuck in my mind was how gentlemanly amid intense competition and focus each player displayed.  I even caught a ball or two which sitting on the sidelines allows….very neat!  It was a great game to watch and I encourage your support of this.  There are still season’s tickets available.

So alive in fact, it’s difficult to keep up and tell you about it at the same time!  I want to share what’s been going on in a couple of different areas.

Firstly, I’m excited to be involved with a project called “Tree Carvings meets Business”.  We are the Forrest City after all; it’s a perfect pairing with our thriving business community.  There is an existing Tree Trunk Tour created by Tourism London for citizens and visitors alike to discover our local talent.  The project has been covered in The Londoner and we’re actively seeking support from the community.  If you’d like to get involved, we’d love to hear from you.

Secondly, I’m thrilled to see the new BMO/ Optimist Soccer/Sports complex in action!  It’s an incredible building not only in structure but how conducive it is in developing our city’s soccer players (either in skill or in fun).  I was invited to speak at the grand opening, on behalf of the Hamilton Road Business Association to a crowd of eager players and community supporters alike. You could park an airliner in there with lots of room.  Everyone should check it out; you’ll find it on Rectory Street.

I encourage you to get out and about our fine city.  There are great things happening!

Last Friday (July 8th) I had the pleasure of attending the Grand Opening for the Argyle Business Improvement Area (BIA) in London.

It is always nice to see area businesses come together, some of them competitors,  with the long term objective of growing their businesses, encouraging new businesses,  and supporting the local community…ultimately improving the property values for everyone.

Here’s a picture of the official ribbon cutting.  Opening Remarks were made by MPP Khalil Ramal, City Councillor Bud Polhill, Executive Director Nancy McSloy and Board Member Elissa lelapi (LIBRO  Financial).

Tom Partalas, president of LOSC,  showed us around this  immense building that houses 4 soccer fields side by side and one regulation field end to end.  110,000 square feet of space will also include a club house, meeting rooms, and an elevated, in door, balcony style walking track that will encircle the field and be made available to seniors etc. during the day.  It looks a lot bigger on the inside than the outside and it was very difficult, with my blackberry camera, to get enough perspective  for you to appreciate the size.

This is a fantastic thing for Hamilton Road and East London and the Optimist Clubs, Federal Gov’t and Provincial Gov’t.  Combined they have brought together over $3,000,000 dollars and should be commended.  They expect large amounts of traffic and tourists as this is the only building like it, so far, in Canada.

The Grand Opening is scheduled for Sept 2011.
